Peter Maasdam was born in Amsterdam in 1962. His passion for art manifests itself in many ways, but truly took shape when he became a student of artist Peter Schenk.

Maasdam works from nude models, usually on paper. The poses his model strikes are brief, which helps preserve the energy in the work. The resulting pieces can be used as finished works, but these studies are often further developed on canvas into larger compositions.

In both his abstract and figurative work, Peter Maasdam employs various collage techniques. Using handmade Nepalese paper, he applies divisions of space to the canvas. With a brush, his hand, a paintbrush, large putty knives, and sometimes directly from the tube, the artist then works passionately toward the final result. The direct transmission of energy is always central; Maasdam doesn’t create art—he lets it emerge!

A hallmark of Maasdam’s art is that his work “breathes.” As a viewer, you feel as though you can walk right through the painting, leaving room for your own interpretation. This applies to both his abstract work and his more figurative pieces. Peter Maasdam’s energy is always unmistakably present in his work. Maasdam: “My best work is a fusion of strength and sensitivity.”
