Peter Maasdam: art that breathes, painted from feeling

The work of Peter Maasdam breathes. Large, free areas, energetic strokes and layers of paper and paint: whether he paints an abstract or a nude, you feel the movement it came from. Maasdam is one of the artists we have the most artworks by in our collection, and for good reason.

Who is Peter Maasdam?

Peter Maasdam was born in Amsterdam in 1962. His passion for art really took shape when he became a pupil of the artist Peter Schenk. He paints many of his artworks in France.

Art as a moment

Maasdam works from feeling. His paintings often show how he felt at a particular moment, which you can also read in titles such as Fragile moments, Abstract feeling, Abstract memory or Watching the sunset. As he puts it himself: his best work is a fusion of strength and sensitivity. He doesn't make art, he lets it happen.

How Peter Maasdam works

  • From a nude model. The model takes short poses, so the energy stays in the work. These studies on paper are sometimes the end result, but are often worked out further on canvas into a larger whole.
  • Collage with handmade paper. He uses Nepalese paper to divide the canvas into planes.
  • With whatever works. Brush, fingers, large palette knives and sometimes straight from the tube.
  • Room for the viewer. You feel as if you could walk right through the painting, with room for your own interpretation.

Abstract or figurative?

Both. In his abstract work, such as the series Abstract poetry and Abstract reflections, it's all about colour, movement and atmosphere. In his nudes you see the same free hand, but around the human body. What connects them is the energy that is unmistakably present.
