Peter Meijer

Peter Meijer is a Dutch visual artist, born in 1953 in Zeist. He is known for his abstract expressionist paintings, in which figures and forms emerge that allude to a timeless reality. Meijer attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem from 1974 to 1979 and then worked for several years as a teacher of drawing and art history before devoting himself entirely to painting. His work consists of colored lines and planes on a white background, with the background often remaining partially visible, lending the painting depth and relief. Meijer paints purely through an intuitive process, in which each new painting responds to the idea from which it originated and the work from which it emerged. Peter Meijer explores various themes in his work, including cities, forests, birds, landscapes, and people. His paintings are constructed through form, color, and composition, with the structure and texture of the applied paint playing a significant role in the quality of his work2. His use of color has evolved over time from predominantly dark colors to softer shades such as peach, pale yellow, and orange.
