Visual artist Peter Bastiaanssen was born in 1957 in Breda and studied at the St. Joost Academy in the same city. He completed his studies in 1987. He then spent a year in Barcelona, after which he settled in Rotterdam, the city where he still lives and works. A black wooden dog with beaded eyes played a central role in Bastiaanssen’s project *Art is a Dog*. In this project, which evolved into an almost existential act, Bastiaanssen focused primarily on challenging dogmas and systems of communication within Western society and, specifically, within the art world. In this project, the artist questioned art that requires endless contemplation without offering any visual quality to discover. The wooden dog sculptures are followed by a series of paintings that build upon the *Art is a Dog* project. These brightly colored paintings feature decorative wall hangings, a rug, a vase of flowers, a fish in a bowl, one or more cups of coffee, and the black dog. The recurring motifs are clear symbols of contemporary bourgeois culture, which Bastiaanssen satirizes.
