Amsterdam 1946 Media: printmaking and mixed media My work is primarily abstract, with clearly recognizable figurative references. The subjects often revolve around humanity and its underlying relationships. Many of my images evoke a sense of security and the trust in which I was raised; perhaps that is why I create a fairy-tale-like world in my work. My works could contribute to a world of carefreeness, joy, acceptance, and tolerance. I incorporate symbols—which serve as reminders of important events—into my works on canvas and in my etchings. Viewers interpret them in their own way, which is precisely the intention. Everyone is free to interpret my work in their own way. Through both the colors and the technique, my work has a sense of depth and the “memories” sometimes take on an archaic atmosphere. Language, phrases, poems, and words are also frequently found in my work—sometimes a cry for attention to everything that troubles me, but expressions of harmony, understanding, and love often go hand in hand in my pieces as well. Using warm, earthy tones in combination with bright colors is always a challenge for me. For my etchings, I work primarily with materials such as zinc, aluminum, and copper. My objects are made of natural materials combined with oil paint, acrylic, gouache, and ink. It is a conscious choice to use natural materials and thereby give credibility to the image.
