Jurriaan Hoefsmit (1986) is a Dutch photographer who literally grew up in the trade. Raised in a family of photographers—with a father and grandfather who were both active in the field—he developed a keen eye for composition, timing, and storytelling through images at an early age. Since 2007, he has officially followed in their footsteps as a professional photographer, with a signature style that combines graphic precision with human depth.
After completing his studies in Graphic Design, Hoefsmit embarked on an artistic journey through Latin America, inspired by greats such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Klein, and Sam Haskins. During this period, his fascination with lines, space, and the people moving within them took shape—a theme that has since served as a common thread throughout his work. His style is characterized by clean compositions, precise timing, and a graphic approach to the photographic image, often playing with perspective and rhythm.
As a freelance photographer, Hoefsmit is highly versatile. His portfolio includes corporate photography, portrait photography, advertising campaigns, and interior photography. His work is both aesthetic and functional, and he consistently captures the essence of his subject in a powerful visual language. He is also active as an instructor: commissioned by Canon, he regularly leads workshops in portrait and fashion photography, sharing his technical knowledge and artistic vision with a new generation of visual artists.
Hoefsmit is also active as an author and compiler of photo books. In 2005, his first book about his hometown of Haarlem was published—a family project in which he, together with his father and brother, captured the city in images. This was followed by publications on North Holland and Amsterdam, in which his love for urban structures, the play of light, and human presence was once again evident. His work has been exhibited at various locations, including the Canon Netherlands headquarters, the Kunstlijn Haarlem, and the Dutch Consulate in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.
Through his photographic work, Jurriaan Hoefsmit strikes a balance between graphic abstraction and human emotion. His images are not only aesthetically appealing but also invite reflection on space, identity, and movement. As a photographer, he is rooted in tradition but always on the lookout for new perspectives—a quality that makes him a versatile and contemporary visual artist.
