Jim Impelmans

Jim Impelmans’ (1985) work stems from a fascination with the human face and the stories it holds. He usually starts with photographs: his own shots, newspaper clippings, film stills, or images from the internet. He transforms these visual sources into raw, expressive paintings in which figures and faces emerge, fade, or merge into new identities. Jim works primarily with oil paint, supplemented with paint markers or spray paint. His practice is driven by experimentation and the desire to continue surprising himself. Jim works quickly, chaotically, and without a predetermined plan, making each work a snapshot of an ongoing quest for expression and meaning. In this spontaneous process, chance and intuition are given free rein—both in the creation and in the experience of the work.
