Gerdine Duijsens (Utrecht, 1951) is a Dutch artist known internationally for her expressive, humorous, and colorful paintings. Although she knew from a young age that art was her calling, she did not consciously choose a professional career until later in life. After completing her studies at the Art Academy in Utrecht, she took part-time classes for five years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arendonk (Belgium). Since 1998, she has worked full-time as an artist and lives and works in Lieshout.
Her work is instantly recognizable by its loose black lines, energetic brushstrokes, and vibrant colors. Duijsens focuses on four main themes: dining scenes, animals, abstracts, and portraits. It is especially her colorful gatherings of bon vivants—the oyster slurpers, cocktail chatterers, and partygoers—that have brought her international recognition. She captures people in unguarded moments, with a gentle irony that reveals both humor and vulnerability. Her style is often described as lyrical expressionism: spontaneous, rhythmic, and full of emotion.
Duijsens exhibits worldwide, with shows in Amsterdam, Cannes, Dubai, Los Angeles, Rome, and Zurich, among other cities. Her work is regularly featured at art fairs and in galleries, and in 2022 she appeared in an RTL4 interview. In 2023, she exhibited at the Jelmoni Gallery in Milan, one of her recent international highlights. Her paintings and silkscreen prints remain beloved for their accessibility, humor, and human warmth—art that almost effortlessly brings a smile to one’s face.
