Angeles Nieto’s works share a common trait: “vitality,” a quality she also exudes personally. Southern influences such as bright light, transparency, and the cheerfulness that sunlight radiates. A style all her own, in which her use of color stands out in particular—deliberate and exuberant at the same time.
Angeles Nieto, Madrid (1963), studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht. This was her second degree, following her studies in art history at the “Universidad Complutense” in Madrid. In the year she graduated, she was nominated for the Academy Prize. A year later, in 1994, she was named “Talent of the Year” in Amsterdam. At Pulchri Studio in The Hague, she received the honorary prize of the “Javaanse Jongens Printmaking Prize.” This was followed by featured articles in leading magazines such as “Art View” and “Blad.”
She creates her work as a game, a dialogue between what has been painted and what remains to be painted, always seeking balance. Angeles: “We are stardust (matter) from the stars.” “That is the basic idea behind my work. Our bodies are made of the same matter, and so is our spiritual life. Together, we are part of the universe; we, too, are stars. The stars (celestial bodies), the world of dreams, or the ability to fly as an expression of freedom often recur in my images.”
Over the past 20 years, Angeles has frequently created commissioned print editions for Philips in Eindhoven; ABP in Heerlen; BnhrmannUbbens in Zutphen; the Red Cross in Amsterdam; and Imtech in Amersfoort. In January–February 2015, she designed a special print for the Trollkohnskoppel organization in Kiesby (Germany) in response to the attacks on Charlie Hebdo in Paris.
Her work is included in the collections of, among others: Philips, Eindhoven; Junkers Bosch, Frankfurt; Siemens, The Hague; Shell, Amsterdam; ABP, Heerlen; Red Cross, Amsterdam; Takayama Reed Co, Ishikawa, Japan; “Langeland” Hospital, Zoetermeer; PricewaterhouseCoopers, Eindhoven; NTS Group, Eindhoven; Eindhoven University of Technology (TU), Trollkohnskoppel, Kiesby (Germany)"
