Saskia Kuulkers (1957) is from Curaçao; her work is recognizable by the bright and bold colors she uses in her pieces (“Kuulkers blue”). She exhibits both domestically and internationally. Her very first exhibition took place at Jan des Boevrie. After attending the fashion academy “DE SCHANS,” she studied at the Rietveld Academy (1978–1982). Her first exhibition was held at Jan Des Bouvrie. This was followed by dozens of exhibitions at various galleries in the Netherlands and abroad, as well as at well-known department stores (Bijenkorf, Metz&Co;, and Habitat) and various art lending libraries in the Netherlands and abroad. She carries the bright colors and light of Curaçao with her. Her travels in South America are also a source of inspiration: the sun, the sea, the flowers, and the people. Her approach is direct and impulsive—what you see is what you get. She creates large-scale paintings on canvas and paper in vibrant colors. She is also highly skilled in working with textiles and other materials. Her work is cheerful and sunny. The powerful colors leave an indelible impression on the viewer’s retina.
