Robin Noorda studied animation and photography at the Rietveld Academy and visual communication at the Rijksacademie. In the 1980s, he began his career as a designer at the NOS and was a pioneer in the field of computer animation. At that time, his independent work consisted of installations for Tropisme, an art movement of which he is a co-founder. After more than two decades, he ultimately resolved the tension between applied and independent work in favor of fine art and has since primarily expressed himself as a 360-degree panorama photographer, animation filmmaker, and light artist. A defining moment was the “Shivering Beauty” project in 2007—a documentary film, book, and photo exhibition exploring the clash between cultural heritage and the culture shock experienced by contemporary Mongolians, based on four journeys through the country. http://www.robin-noorda.com/transit-mongolia.html
With his two stop-motion animated films about the Red-end ant, he won numerous international awards and received a nomination for a Golden Calf. http://www.robin-noorda.com/animation-red-end-and-the-factory-plant.html
Another highlight was his curatorship of the photo exhibition “Photosynthesis—New Light on Plants” at the Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam in 2013 and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in 2015. http://www.robin-noorda.com/photosynthesis.html
His light art projects were featured at the light festivals in Amsterdam in 2014 and 2016/2017, in Groningen in 2016, in Sweden in 2015/2016, in China in 2016/2017, Singapore in 2017, and at Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest light festival, in 2017. http://www.robin-noorda.com/you-lookin-at-me-in-sydney.html http://www.robin-noorda.com/sneaky-serpents-on-tour.html
He has been affiliated with various institutions such as the NIAF, VAF, and the NFF (committee member for animation) and has taught at various academies, including formerly Minerva and HKU, and currently NFA, VRA, and ArtEZ.
