Paul van den Heijden

Paul van den Heijden is a contemporary artist whose artistic journey has been shaped by a deep longing for expression and freedom. For twelve years, he took intensive art classes with Ricky Burnett, where he focused on realistic oil painting. This period laid a solid technical foundation for his work, and Paul speaks with great gratitude about Burnett’s guidance. After the COVID pandemic, Paul noticed that his inspiration was waning. Instead of falling into stagnation, he chose a radical shift: he let go of representational imagery and began painting from his feelings. This intuitive approach led to works composed of overlapping stripes and lines that intersect horizontally and vertically. For the first time, he experienced a new sense of calm and contemplation in his creative process. A pivotal moment in his development was his introduction to the work of Agnes Martin, an influential American abstract artist. Paul found a deep kinship in her philosophy and work: “I wish she were still alive and living next door to me.” Her minimalist approach inspired him to capture his own inner world on canvas without external distractions.

Currently, Paul paints exclusively what he feels. His work is an intimate diary of lines and textures, a visual form of self-reflection. This shift toward abstraction has not only liberated him artistically but also connected him emotionally to his creations.
