Martens’ work emerges from an intuitive and open approach. Without a predefined plan, he allows the creative process to unfold, causing lines, swaths of color, and shapes to organize themselves almost automatically on the paper or canvas. This free way of working results in images with a strong, autonomous visual expressiveness. Although recognizable elements sometimes emerge, the representation is never the central focus; it serves merely as a starting point for exploring the picture plane and the tension between form, space, and emptiness.
A recurring feature in his body of work is the use of organic, flowing forms that seem to develop like living structures. These forms move across the white surface, growing, shifting, and creating a rhythm that is both abstract and associative. They do not refer directly to visible reality, but they do evoke impressions of landscapes, fragments of nature, or inner spaces. This gives his abstract compositions an almost tangible, physical presence.
Travel is an important source of inspiration. During his trips abroad, he gathers impressions, makes sketches, and captures images on slides. These experiences are relived in the studio and translated into new works. The encounter with unfamiliar environments, colors, and textures consistently opens up an inner space that remains palpable in his drawings and paintings.
His work invites the viewer to wander through a world of movement, layering, and intuition. It is a visual language that defies definition but continually evokes new meanings and associations.
