William Scott was an influential abstract artist from Northern Ireland, known for his still lifes, landscapes, and female nudes. He is considered the most internationally recognized painter from Ulster of the 20th century. His early life was chronicled by his son, James Scott, in the film *Every Picture Tells a Story*.

He was born in Greenock, Scotland, and moved to Enniskillen in 1924, where he took his first drawing lessons. He later studied at the Belfast School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London. In 1937, he married Mary Lucas, and together they founded an art school in Pont-Aven, France. During World War II, he served in the British Army but remained active as an artist. After the war, he became a teacher at the Bath Academy of Art and formed friendships with members of the St. Ives Group in Cornwall. Beginning in the 1950s, Scott exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennial. His work evolved from figurative to abstract and was influenced by American Abstract Expressionists such as Rothko and de Kooning. In the 1960s and 1970s, he received several honors, including a CBE and honorary doctorates from prominent universities. In 1972, he was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the Tate Gallery. After his death in 1989, many more retrospectives were dedicated to him. He summarized his artistic vision as follows: “I am an abstract artist in the sense that I abstract… I remain fascinated by modern spatiality, primitive forms, and the sensual power of life.”
