Willi Baumeister

Willi Baumeister (1889–1955) was one of the most influential German abstract artists, designers, and art theorists of the twentieth century. Born in Stuttgart, he began his training at the local art academy under Adolf Hölzel, where he formed lifelong friendships with artists such as Oskar Schlemmer. In the 1920s and early 1930s, he gained international renown for his Constructivist “Wall Pictures” (Mauerbilder) and his work as a typographer and professor in Frankfurt. His success, however, was abruptly cut short by the rise of the Nazi regime; in 1933, he was dismissed by the National Socialists, banned from exhibiting, and his work was labeled Entartete Kunst (degenerate art). During this period of isolation in the war years, he continued to paint in secret and conducted in-depth research into prehistoric and Asian art, which laid the foundation for his later, biomorphic style. After World War II, Baumeister played a crucial role in the reconstruction of cultural life and the reintroduction of abstract art in Germany. He became a professor at the Stuttgart Academy of Art and, in 1947, published his influential theoretical book *Das Unbekannte in der Kunst* (“The Unknown in Art”), in which he defended artistic freedom and non-figurative creation. In his late period, which includes the well-known Bluxao series from 1955, the year of his death, his style evolved toward the lyrical abstraction of Art Informel. With his focus on archetypal forms, cosmobiological processes, and the liberation from visible reality, Baumeister remained a pioneer of the European modernist avant-garde until his sudden death at the age of 66 while working at his easel.
