Unknow artist Banksy

Who is Banksy?

Banksy is one of the most famous artists in the world, known for his satirical and often politically charged street art. Despite his global fame, his identity remains officially unknown. He is often described as a “mysterious” and “elusive” figure, with fans including Brad Pitt and Christina Aguilera.

Early Career

Banksy began creating stencil art in Bristol in the 1990s, inspired by the local music and art scene. His first major work, *The Mild Mild West*, depicts a teddy bear throwing a Molotov cocktail at riot police. In the 2000s, he moved to London and expanded his work to cities around the world.

From the Streets to the Auction House

His artworks became media events and sold for millions. In 2018, he destroyed his piece *Girl with Balloon* live immediately after it was sold at Sotheby’s, drawing global attention.

Identity and Speculation

There are various theories about who Banksy is: from Robin Gunningham to Robert Del Naja (Massive Attack) and even Neil Buchanan (Art Attack). Some believe Banksy is a collective. In a 2003 BBC interview, he appears to confirm his first name as “Robbie.”

Politics and Activism

His recent works address themes such as the war in Ukraine, immigration, and the environment. In 2024, a series of animal artworks appeared in London, including elephants, monkeys, and a rhinoceros on a car. Not all of his works survive intact—some are quickly stolen or defaced.

What if he is unmasked?

According to gallery owner John Brandler, revealing Banksy’s identity would have little impact on his brand. His art and message have become so powerful and commercially successful that anonymity is no longer essential.
