Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was born in Málaga as the son of an art teacher, and it became clear at a young age that he possessed exceptional talent. His father recognized his aptitude and gave him a classical foundation in drawing and painting, but Picasso soon felt constrained by academic rules. During his youth in A Coruña and later in Barcelona, he developed keen powers of observation and an early urge to experiment. The death of his sister Conchita and his move to Barcelona were emotional and artistic turning points that profoundly influenced his early work.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, Picasso made his way to Paris, the bustling center of the avant-garde. There he went through his Blue and Rose Periods, in which melancholy, poverty, circus figures, and intimate scenes alternated. His radical breakthrough came in 1907 with *Les Demoiselles d’Avignon*, a work that turned the foundations of Western painting upside down and heralded the birth of Cubism. Together with Georges Braque, he developed a new visual language in which perspective, form, and space were deconstructed and reconstructed. This period established him as one of the most innovative artists of his time.

Throughout his long career, Picasso continually reinvented himself. He worked in a wide range of styles—from neoclassical to surrealist—and created an unparalleled body of work comprising tens of thousands of pieces, ranging from paintings and sculptures to ceramics and prints. His art reflects a life full of passion, political engagement, and inexhaustible curiosity. Until his death in 1973, Picasso remained a driving force in modern art—an artist who not only followed artistic movements but created and shaped them for generations to come.
