Mark Rothko, born Markus Rothkowitz, was an American painter of Latvian descent, known for his abstract expressionist and color-field paintings. He is one of the most important figures of Abstract Expressionism.

Biography:

Early Years and Immigration:

Rothko was born in Dvinsk, Russia (now Latvia) in 1903. His family, fleeing anti-Semitism, emigrated to the United States in 1913 and settled in Portland, Oregon.

Education and Early Career:

Rothko studied briefly at Yale University but left to devote himself entirely to art. He moved to New York and joined the art scene, where he experimented with various styles.

Evolution toward abstraction:

In the 1940s, Rothko developed his signature style, featuring large, rectangular fields of color intended to evoke emotions and spiritual experiences. He sought to inspire introspection in the viewer.

Artistic Recognition and Commissions:

Rothko’s work became increasingly well-known. He received major commissions, such as the paintings for the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York and the Rothko Chapel in Houston.

Depression and death:

Despite his artistic successes, Rothko struggled with depression. He committed suicide in 1970 in his studio in New York.
