Koen Hillewaert

Born in Ostend (Belgium) in 1964, Koen Hillewaert grew up near Bruges. After earning his degree in Physical Education from the University of Leuven, he began working in the field of information technology. And indeed, technology has always held a special interest for him. Although he owned some analog cameras, it wasn’t until the arrival of the first digital cameras that his true passion was ignited. His first subjects were his own children, and later—driven by the growth of the social photography network Flickr—the camera became an integral part of his daily life. Influenced by the strobist movement pioneered by David Hobby, his photographs evolved into stories.

I am fascinated by people, space, and light. I capture moments where perspective, scale, time, and distance momentarily become intangible. My photographs explore that state. The magic lies in the stories they create as you look at them.

I have a desire to explore and a desire to share—both the knowledge I’ve gathered and the images I’ve created.
