Gustav Klimt (Vienna, July 14, 1862 – February 6, 1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most influential artists of early modern art. He grew up in a family of artisans and showed exceptional talent from a young age. At the Vienna School of Applied Arts, he developed into a technically skilled decorative painter, known for his murals and monumental commissions for theaters and public buildings.
At the end of the 19th century, Klimt broke with the academic art world and became a co-founder of the Vienna Secession, a reform movement that brought international modern art trends to Vienna. During this period, he developed his signature style: a combination of symbolism, ornamentation, sensuality, and psychological depth. His work became increasingly personal and controversial, particularly due to the explicit and intimate way in which he depicted femininity.
Klimt’s most famous works date from his Golden Period, during which he combined gold leaf, mosaic-like patterns, and rich decoration with powerful symbolism. Iconic paintings such as *The Kiss*, *Judith I*, and *Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I* are among the most recognizable works of European Art Nouveau. In addition to his figurative work, he also painted many landscapes, in which he experimented with the division of planes and color structures.
Until his death in 1918, Klimt remained a central figure in the Viennese art world. His influence extended far beyond Austria and inspired artists such as Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Today, Klimt is regarded as a key figure in Symbolism and Art Nouveau, and his work remains beloved worldwide for its combination of emotion, ornamentation, and innovative visual language.
