Fons Haagmans

Fons Haagmans (Schinnen, 1948) is a Dutch painter and draftsman of figurative works and nudes. He studied at the City Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht. He has taught at the ABK in Maastricht, the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Haagmans lives and works in Maastricht. He primarily creates paintings and prints (lithographs). Haagmans has an aversion to oil paint. Since the mid-1980s, he has been painting monochrome canvases using “ordinary” paint, featuring a single motif—numbers and letters. Later, he incorporated shapes from heraldry and tarot cards, expanding his work from a single figure to a rhythmic repetition of figures. He transfers the motifs onto the canvas using stencils and multiple smooth layers of paint. This results in flat, textureless “figure-on-background” paintings.
