David Hockney (1937–2026) grew up in Bradford, where his early fascination with drawing and painting was nurtured by a strict but creative family. After studying at the Bradford School of Art and later the Royal College of Art in London, he rapidly emerged as one of the most innovative voices in British art. His early work, which blends Expressionist influences with personal themes, quickly stood out within the emerging Pop Art movement. Hockney’s refusal to conform to academic rules—as exemplified by his protest piece *Life Painting for a Diploma*—marked the beginning of a career that would be defined by experimentation and individuality.

In the 1960s, Hockney moved to Los Angeles, a city that would permanently transform his visual language. The Californian light, the swimming pools, the architecture, and the openness of the culture formed the basis for some of his most iconic works, including *A Bigger Splash* and *Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)*. At the same time, he continued to evolve across a wide range of media: from painting and etching to photography, photomontages, and later digital techniques such as iPad drawings and Multiview videos. His constant drive to embrace new technologies made him an artist who continually pushed his own boundaries.

Hockney remained active and influential well into his later years. His major landscape series from Yorkshire, his experimental perspective studies, and his digital work confirmed his status as one of the most versatile artists of his time. He was honored worldwide with major exhibitions, prestigious awards, and record-breaking auction results. Hockney passed away in 2026 at the age of 88, but he leaves behind an extensive and groundbreaking body of work that has permanently changed the art world.
