Ad van Hassel (Roosendaal, 1953) trained as a visual artist in Maarten Krabbe’s studio. There, he developed skills in various techniques. Cityscapes, landscapes, and floral still lifes are frequent themes in his work. His cityscapes demonstrate an exceptionally keen understanding of spatial perspective. Particularly in his etchings, he depicts a play of lines in perspective with a keen eye for detail and almost effortless precision. In 1985, one of his etchings was acquired by the Rijksprentenkabinet (National Print Collection) of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Between 1981 and 1986, Ad van Hassel ran his own art gallery. But despite his business success, his work as an artist has increasingly taken precedence, and a few years ago he reestablished himself as an independent artist. Whereas he previously worked mainly from life, he now gives free rein to his imagination and focuses on screen printing, a medium that fully accommodates his preference for the interplay of colors. “Progress along a chosen path is important. Development rather than stagnation. Only then does rejuvenation result from the passage of time; to quote R. Tagore (1895): ‘Man is like a newborn child. His power is the ability to grow.’”
