Art in the office: why it works and how to go about it

Art in the office is more than decoration. A well-chosen artwork gives a reception area character, makes a meeting room feel less bare and shows visitors straight away who you are as a company. Yet many office walls stay empty, or the same pieces have hung there for years. In this article you'll read why art at work makes a difference and how to go about it smartly.
Why art in the office works
- A strong first impression. Your reception and meeting rooms are your company's calling card. Art makes the difference between business-like and welcoming.
- A nicer place to work. Employees spend a lot of time at the office. Surroundings with colour and character feel better than white walls.
- A conversation starter. A striking artwork breaks the ice, at a job interview as much as at a client meeting.
- Showing your identity. Sleek and modern, colourful and creative or more classic: art shows what your organisation stands for.
Renting art instead of buying it
For companies, renting art is often more practical than buying it. There is no big investment, you are not tied to the same artworks for years and you can adapt the collection when your office changes. You can also rotate: after one or more years new artworks go up, so the workplace stays fresh and people start looking at the walls again.
How to go about it
- Start with the most visible spots: reception, meeting rooms and the corridors clients walk through.
- Think room by room. A meeting room calls for something different from a quiet room or a canteen. On our site you can make a selection per room.
- Choose a size that fits the wall. One large artwork above a long meeting table often works better than a few small ones.
- Agree how often you rotate. Every year, every two years or every three years: that also determines the price.

An example from practice
We look after the art at a large law firm in Amsterdam. At reception and in the meeting rooms we rotate the artworks every year, so clients always see something new. In the offices themselves we rotate every two years.
The nice part: employees also receive a home budget. They can use it to furnish their home office with art from our collection, so working from home feels just as inspiring as being at the office.
What does office art cost?
That depends on the type of artwork and how often you want to rotate. The price indication page shows the cost of an artwork per year for each category, with the choice of rotating every year, every two years or every three years.
