Yon Nicolas

No matter how passionate her work may be at times, she herself is modest. You could call her a well-balanced person. Yet her paintings contain a wide range of emotions: joy, sadness, anger, tenderness, or, suddenly, just peace. She creates her work in series, which often stand in sharp contrast to one another. “Once I’ve accomplished something, I refuse to fall into a routine,” she says. When she feels there’s no further challenge, she starts a new series—often something completely different. A well-balanced person? Yes, but also impatient.

But despite the differences, color and light are the central themes of all these paintings. Even in a series of photographs in muted black, gray, and white, there might be a sudden splash of red. She thrives on color and light. Some of her paintings seem to radiate sunlight throughout the entire space around them, even when they hang in the basement.

Her work is full of movement, yet it is never uncontrolled. She keeps it in check with sharp rectangular shapes, anchors it with a horizon, or gives it direction with a single swift line. That is why it is dynamic; for movement for its own sake is simply chaos.

A single canvas can take over an entire wall. Here we see light and darkness; movement and restraint; intense color and colorlessness; definition and vagueness. Ultimately, it all comes down to “balance.”
