Bert Houweling (Haarlem, 1949) attended the School of Photography in The Hague. He has been working as a photojournalist since 1973. In addition to commissioned work for various clients, his focus on independent photography has been growing steadily. Houweling enjoys working on long-term photo series that focus on a single subject. This is how the following series came about: Beaches in Europe, Antwerp’s Old Harbor, Bathing Culture in England, America, Flowers in Decay, and Islands. The photos of Santorini are part of the Islands series; they were shot on large-format film and printed with Ultrachrome ink on watercolor paper, giving the prints a very long lifespan. Houweling prints his color photography himself as much as possible to maintain control over the final result.
